The Process of Painting

How do you start a painting? What do you do after you've started? How do you take a painting from beginning to end?

There are as many ways to begin and progress through a painting as there are painters — and not all of them work well.
In Acrylic Painting 101, you'll learn an approach to beginning and proceeding through a painting that will stand you in good stead, and give you a good foundation for whatever painting you will do in the future.

You'll also learn what to expect as you go through the process, and how to tame the voice of your Inner Critic when it pops up as you're painting (and, trust me, it will do that).
It will get you off to a great start!

Frequently Asked Questions

How often do you teach Acrylic Painting 101?
  • I generally teach it as a workshop once or twice a year in Calistoga, California, in the Napa Valley. It's taken me a year to work on recovery from the 2017 Tubbs Wildfire, and I've finally scheduled my next one for January of 2020. If you are interested in having me come teach it for your own group, please contact me.
  • I also teach Acrylic Painting and Mixed Media classes on a regular basis at the Calistoga Art Center, in Calistoga, on Friday afternoons, from 11 AM to 2 PM.
  • I will be offering it as an online class, I hope beginning in 2020.
  • I am looking into teaching Acrylic Painting 101 workshops at other locations in Northern California. If you're interested, let me know!
Do you teach landscape painting?
  • Yes, I teach workshops on both Landscape Painting and Abstract Landscape Painting in Calistoga. Acrylic Painting 101 is designed to give you a good foundation, so you can go on to something more complex, such as painting landscapes, if you choose.
  • If you are interested in having me come teach painting landscapes for your own group, please contact me.
  • I also teach landscape painting to students who want to study it in my regular Acrylic Painting classes in Calistoga.
  • I will be offering instruction in landscape and abstract landscape painting as an online class (I'm aiming for 2020 for each of them).
Do you teach mixed media or collage painting using acrylics?
  • Yes, I do. You can learn more about my Adventures in Mixed Media workshops at: NapaValleyArtWorkshops.com.
